The Pinkness ([info]flamingopinkie) wrote in [info]azjournal,
Congress is about to vote on amending the U.S. Constitution to deny marriage equality to same-sex couples.

Never before has our Constitution been amended to take away anyone's rights. Yet our Senators will vote on this amendment in the next 48 hours. (Wednesday, or, rather, TOMORROW)

It's urgent that we speak up now. This hateful divisiveness has no place in America.

Please call your Senators now, at:

Senator John McCain
Direct: (202) 224-2235

Senator Jon L. Kyl
Direct: (202) 224-4521

Equality in marriage is the civil rights issue of our generation. We can't let anyone, or any group, be singled out for discrimination based on who they are or who they love.

Thank you.

This isn't about homo/hetero/omni/tri/a-sexuality.
This is about our right to be free of religiously-stipulated government control.

Already wrote to both. Too bad they're both Republicans.

Yeah, I know, but they need to remember that they were 'hired' to represent ALL of Arizona.

McCain has a history of breaking from party lines. He's not a lost cause.

Never before? I'm sorry, but you are referring to the Constitution of the United States of America, right? The place wedged between Canada and Mexico, I mean.

Most obviously, the 18th Amendment (you might know it as "Prohibition") took away people's rights to make or sell alcohol, but we also have the 22nd Amendment, which took away the right of an individual to serve more than two terms as President.

I'm agree that this Amendment needs to fail -- it's an embarrassment to our nation, as far as I'm concerned -- but let's not make shit up.

I didn't write it, I'm just passing the concept along.

I didn't think nitpicking would do anybody any good. Sorry.

Furthermore, neither of the issues you pointed out were amended to the constitution based on a solely religious basis, which, I believe, is the point.

Are you kidding? Prohibition had as much of a religious component as this proposed amendment.

Nitpicking helps strenghten your case; A political argument mired in half-truths, misinformation or outright lies isn't given the opportunity to be judged on its own merits.

While you have a good point, you would never make a good politician. Most of their platforms and agendas are based upon half truths, misinformation, and out and out lies. Or non-information if you will.

The only difference between their half truths etc, is they're formed in such a way as to be hard to disprove or refute until a good while after the fact. *grin*

And of course this thread is pointless now. The senate voted it down.
